The solar furnace at Odeillo is larger than the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and one of the most powerful on the planet. The laboratory here has earned a reputation as a unique scientific centre for the study of high temperature phenomena and the behavior of materials in extreme conditions.
The solar furnace at Odeillo is a government research laboratory co funded by the University of Perpignan. Their work focuses mainly on thermal studies at high temperatures: heat transfer fluid systems and energy converters and behavior of materials at high temperatures and in extreme conditions. These fields are of particular interest to the aerospace industry.
A public information centre, Héliodysée is open to adults and children and uses educational and fun ways to demonstrate the uses of solar energy and its associated applications (renewable energy and home use). Also on display are government projects on energy, the environment, materials for use in space and materials of the future.
