The THEMIS power station was built in the Cerdagne in order to benefit from its exceptional weather conditions. The Cerdagne has close to 2400 hours of sunshine per year and very little wind which limits the number of down days in the facility. The area’s altitude helps by allowing a more direct access to solar rays. The station comprises 201 heliostats (giant mirrors pointing at the sun) which direct the sun’s rays towards a 105 metre high tower.
