Lake Bouillouses and surroundings is listed as a natural site. This lake is one of the most beautiful in the region and a great weekend destination. An impressive dam was built there at the beginning of the 20th century to regulate the flow of the river Têt and to provide electricity to Le Train Jaune (The Yellow Train) using its very own hydro-electric station. The lunar landscape and multitude of smaller lakes add to the charm of the trail leading to the summit of Pic Carlit
Getting there:
In the summer of 2000, the Pyrénées-Orientales local council started regulating access to this listed site, in order to limit the ever growing number of cars visiting the lake. The road is now only accessible by shuttle bus and cable cars in July and August.
By road:
The road is closed from 7am – 7pm from June 30th until September 2nd inclusive. Parking is available at Pla de Barrès, where shuttles leave from for Bouillouses lake and the banks of the river Têt. The last shuttle leaves at 6.30pm and the last shuttle returns at 9.30pm.
By cable car:
Cable cars operate within 30 minutes walk up to the dam from secteur de la calme in Font-Romeu. Ensure you are aware of opening and closing times either at the Tourist Office in Font Romeu: 04 68 30 68 30 or at the cable car information point: 04 68 04 24 61
By foot:
There are several ways of reaching the Bouillouses dam; they vary in difficulty, length and departure points:
Departing from “Lac du Passand” (Porté Puymorens) - 8 hours walk
Departing from the chapel at Sant Marti d’Envalls (Angoustrine) - 2 ¼ hours walk
Departing from the car park at “Pla de Barrès” (La llagonne) 3 hours and 20 mins walk.
Departing from the main ski car park (Formiguères) 6 hours and 30 mins walk
You are strongly advised to equip yourself with a good quality local map (IGN) before departing on a hike, check the weather forecast, wear robust footwear and bring some water and food.
For total peace of mind, set off with one of our mountain guides who love to share their passion for nature and the Carlit mountain range in complete safety.
A list of guides and brochures about Bouillouses and the surrounding area is available from tourist offices and information points throughout the region.
WE RECOMMEND: Allow at least a day for visiting this magnificent nature reserve, enjoy the breathtaking panoramas and you might even happen upon the occasional native animal in summer. Hot tip: a ride in the cable car is a must!
